Lektor Practical Instructor Course is designed for experienced Air Traffic Controllers in terms to provide the necessary fundamental knowledge, skills and attitude to enable the issue of a practical instructor (OJTI or STDI) endorsement to an ATCO licence.
Lektor Practical Instructor Course is certified and compliant with the regulation (EU) 2015/340.
After completion of the course, the future ATC Training practical instructors will have the skills necessary to help student air traffic controllers and trainees to progress toward a successful conclusion of their operational or simulator training.
They will be able to assist their future ATC trainees in their learning progress by considering their individual needs and abilities when creating appropriate learning conditions. The Lektor Practical Instructor Course emphasises students’ personal learning skills by taking a heavily learner centered approach to the training as a whole.
The Instructors passing the course shall have the ability to support each student to success by proactively enforcing their reflective actions and pursuit of high standards.
Prerequisites
The Lektor Practical Instructor Course participant shall be qualified as an Air Traffic Controller, or in other role within Air Traffic Service domain. We welcome AFISOs and ATSEPs on these courses as well.
Duration of the course
Lektor’s Practical Instructor Course has been designed to take between 3 to 10 days as it has 32 effective hours. The duration depends mainly on how much time each participant can dedicate to their studies each day. In general, you can expect a five-day duration to complete all necessary studies, the practical tasks, and the competence assessment.
Training methods
The Practical Instructor Course is done fully online. It includes theoretical parts, which can be complemented with a professional ATC Training instructor via videoconferencing tool, or as independent study using a Learning Management System to access the learner-paced modules.
The modules with instructor-led learning include discussions, presentations, virtual table-top exercises and case-studies. They involve the learner, so the participants will have a very active role on the course.
Study modules on the LMS utilise varied modern elements you can expect from an online course. We have even created our own video content specially designed for ATC training. You’ll also study with carefully curated public videos, articles, and podcasts. Activities include participating in forums, doing quizzes, submitting assignments, and other tasks that keep you engaged in the learning process. Again, there is no time for you to be just a passive recipient of information. An active learner learns better.
Practical exercises and competence assessment
Lektor is very proud to use an innovative tool to accommodate practical instructor training online. We have developed an interactive software app, which creates a virtual ATC Training context for the learners. We call our tool, the Instructor Skills Trainer, or IST. Here’s how it works.
The IST combines a continuous video and audio connection between the participant, the course instructor/assessor and the role-playing ATC trainee in the exercise. On their screens, they all have a view of a stripboard and of an Air Traffic Control environment which are on an interactive whiteboard. The environments are available for TWR, Approach and Area control disciplines, each with their own set of procedures and rules to follow.
The exercise has a script, which forms a dynamic traffic situation in which the training takes place. The participants can move the strips and supportive symbols on the screen according to the developing traffic situation.
The system is also approved to be used on the competence assessment at the end of the course. Exercises and assessments can be recorded and used later as educational material or as evidence for auditory purposes.
The practical exercises and competence assessments are scheduled during the course. We follow your progress, and once you have completed the necessary coursework we will contact you to agree on the dates for your exercises.
